Hi Simon,
I am enjoying your blog.. I to live here in Cairns. In fact We have similar backgrounds..Manchester, I grew up in Altrincham/Timperley, the Hacienda never went but in fact I have a mate from school days called Dave Rofe who was the main DJ there for many a year before going off to manage The Doves..Me, Dave and Ian Brown of Stone Roses fame all used to hang out together..football you obviously got drunk in the wrong pub in Manc when you arrived as it is a shame you chose the now noisy neighbours. My work involved press to (AD DEPARTMENTS MAINLY) Daily Express London when it used to sell, Punch, She Mag where I worked with the big bosses wife Michelle Harris- as in Jerry Harris' other half (he is ex Times in London as well if you were unaware) I ended up in the 90s running 4 papers in Papau New Guinea as GM many years ago. I find it interesting the choices you went through in deciding where to settle-we and my wife went through much the same. How ironic that a journo from manc land ends up running the online Cairns Post and a guy from Cairns ends up running Man Uniteds website..

Hola Simon,

Glad to read that you think Cairns is a wonderful place. I fully agree! We are having a great time on our travels but one thing it does, is make us realise how lucky we are in Australia and Cairns. In Barcelona at the moment....

Sadly that is not what I read in the main stream media. Don't look that often but had to see what happened with Oprah when I saw on ABC news that she was in Australia. Can't believe she didn't come to Cairns. Her loss but sadly also ours.

I think the media is only just starting to change with the internet and you are right in the middle of it. Keen to pick your brains when I get home.

Only problem with Cairns is that our narrow economy means main jobs are in tourism. Not the best payers. Diversifying the economy was something I was working on with education and mining and hope that continues.

Take care and have a great Christmas

Jim

PS I am uploading some photos on facebook but have been a bit slack lately

Beggin' your pardon sir, and you probably heard this before, but the Kon-Tiki raft landed in the islands of (what was then, in the late 19040's) French Polynesia. Aku-Aku was the name of the book that Heyerdahl wrote about a totally separate expedition to Easter Island, and much of the book has been questioned in the years since it's 1958 publication.

Ah, the election and the Chinese. The latter first, the Chinese have got lots of loot. Is the naval base at Trincomalee, one the RN's?

As for the election, if you can remember that far back, it was hard to find anyone who voted for Margaret Thatcher but unless you believe that those elections were rigged, lots of people did. Likewise, lots of enthusiastic NuLabour Blairites are backtracking these days
