Riesling tasting: Oddbins Balham

Spit or swallow? Tonight it was a no brainer. Now we finally have weekends together, Rachelle and I have signed-up for a monthly wine tasting at our local Oddbins. Manager Charlotte’s plan is to work through the six noble grapes (perhaps punctuated by Champagne at Christmas), then move onto tasting specific regions. Tonight, for Ł10 each, we got to sample 15 wines ranging in price from Ł6.99 to Ł13.99: a proper bargain.

I’m not really much of a riesling man – good in small doses with certain dishes, and not really something I like glugging on its own – but tonight was fun. Highlights included the Murdoch James (from Kiwiland’s South Island), the Clare Valley Majella and two wines from Germany that bucked the Blue Nun stereotype: winemaker of the year Dr Loosen and the delicious Bird Label. Highlight had to be the delicious D’Arenberg Noble dessert wine: honey in a glass.
